The Mira River is alive and runs through us. The invitation for our time together is to trace the Mira River following the river's songlines from the estuary in Vila Nova de Milfontes, through flood plain, to wetland and marshes, to the town of Odemira. Thinking about and with water and their many forms of agency, in the third edition of FULGORES DO RIO we will meet the waters of the Loire, the Danube, the Guadiana, the Euphrates, the Tigris, and the Douro. "Don't lose the thread" with Karmit!!! A study group taking place on September 3, 10, and 17 at Espaço Nativa. Admission is free. In modern times, wool—this precious material—is being overlooked. Here in the Alentejo, some of the sheep’s wool also ends up in the trash. Over the past 15 years, Karmit has been learning and sharing this ancestral knowledge about wool. “For me, wool is a way to awaken, remember, and connect.” You’re invited to join us and, together, preserve these precious fibers. Karmit will be here for two sessions, during which we’ll learn: *the process of cleaning raw sheep’s wool *processing and carding the wool. *spinning with a spindle and spinning wheel. On September 8, the Municipal Holiday, the highlight will be the Solemn Session for Municipal Day, followed by the traditional luncheon. In the afternoon, religious celebrations in honor of Our Lady of Mercy will take place, featuring a Solemn Mass, a procession, and an auction in honor of the patron saint. The celebrations are organized by the Parish of Odemira, with support from the Municipality of Odemira and the Parish Council of São Salvador and Santa Maria. Here in the Alentejo, some of the sheep’s wool also ends up in the trash. Over the past 15 years, Karmit has been learning and sharing this ancestral knowledge about wool. “For me, wool is a way to awaken, remember, and connect.” You’re invited to join us and, together, preserve these precious fibers. The Mira River is alive and runs through us. The invitation for our time together is to trace the Mira River following the river's songlines from the estuary in Vila Nova de Milfontes, through flood plain, to wetland and marshes, to the town of Odemira. Thinking about and with water and their many forms of agency, in the third edition of FULGORES DO RIO we will meet the waters of the Loire, the Danube, the Guadiana, the Euphrates, the Tigris, and the Douro. Here in the Alentejo, some of the sheep’s wool also ends up in the trash. Over the past 15 years, Karmit has been learning and sharing this ancestral knowledge about wool. “For me, wool is a way to awaken, remember, and connect.” You’re invited to join us and, together, preserve these precious fibers. Following two projects carried out in this area—*Vaga* (2024) and *Varela* (2025)—*Valdemar* stems from a desire to deepen the relationship that has developed over time between artists and residents, exploring the village as a living territory, a space of memory, encounter, and transformation. If *Vaga* was a first encounter with the sea and its practices, and *Varela* a deep dive into the land, the homes, and the intimacy of the village, *Valdemar* emerges as a new movement within this balance between sea and land. The works created at Azenha do Mar have followed the rhythm of the tides: they reach out toward the outside, return to the interior, and once again open up to the ocean. “Valdemar” offers a time for presence, listening, and co-creation, in which art is built from the lives, gestures, and stories of those who inhabit this unique place on the coast of Odemira. We’ll explore Chandra Namaskar — Moon Salutations — a slow, grounding flow that moves with the breath and invites a different quality from the more energizing Sun Salutations. We’ll take time to move and stretch the whole body, release tension, and gradually slow down, finishing with deep relaxation. A gentle practice suitable for different levels. No previous experience needed.

Following two projects carried out in this area—*Vaga* (2024) and *Varela* (2025)—*Valdemar* stems from a desire to deepen the relationship that has developed over time between artists and residents, exploring the village as a living territory, a space of memory, encounter, and transformation. If *Vaga* was a first encounter with the sea and its practices, and *Varela* a deep dive into the land, the homes, and the intimacy of the village, *Valdemar* emerges as a new movement within this balance between sea and land. The works created at Azenha do Mar have followed the rhythm of the tides: they reach out toward the outside, return to the interior, and once again open up to the ocean. “Valdemar” offers a time for presence, listening, and co-creation, in which art is built from the lives, gestures, and stories of those who inhabit this unique place on the coast of Odemira. Have you ever imagined dyeing fabrics using only leaves, roots, and fruits? 🌿 We’re joining Sara Florindo for an afternoon of discovery: we’ll prepare the fibers through mordanting and explore Shibori — the art of folding, twisting, and tying fabrics to create unique and one-of-a-kind designs. Sara is an architect with a background in education who has always been passionate about textile art. She taught herself to sew and, for about 8 years, has dedicated herself to sewing, patternmaking, and natural dyeing. Along the way, she realized that this world has its roots in the history of the women in her family—her grandmothers and great-grandmothers who worked with linen from Beira Alta, from the fields to the loom. This knowledge wasn’t passed down to her directly, but Sara set out to rediscover it and breathe new life into it in her workshops.
