    “mother rock”

“Mother Stone”: A Workshop to Listen to the Land Through Memories On September 3, from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., the Espaço + Gallery in Aljezur will host the writing and reading workshop “Pedra-Mãe,” part of the “Arte Dentro” initiative promoted by the Municipality of Aljezur. The workshop invites participants to explore, through writing and sharing, the relationship between memory, territory, and identity, using stone as a starting point and a meeting place. Drawing on images from the film *À Procura da Melodia*, the workshop offers an exercise in actively listening to memories and stories—both individual and collective. Participants will be invited to write about the places they inhabit, traverse, and recognize as their own, reflecting on how these spaces are woven into their stories and, at the same time, become part of the memory of those very places. The stone—an element deeply connected to the landscape of Aljezur and the cliffs that line the coast—serves as both a metaphor and the material foundation of this experience: a presence that endures, bears marks and stories, and, over time, transforms itself and those who inhabit and observe it. “Pedra-Mãe” is based on the idea that memories can find ways to endure beyond those who experienced them. Through words, images, sounds, and silences, the workshop aims to create a space for connection where every story can be told, heard, and returned to the community. The work developed throughout the session will also give rise to a collective fanzine, compiled from the materials produced by the participants—texts, drawings, notes, and audio recordings. The publication will later be printed, allowing each participant to take home a copy of this collective record of memories and experiences. Participation is free, but registration is required by August 26 at cultura@cm-aljezur.pt. The workshop is limited to a maximum of 20 participants.

  • The Gift of No!

    The Gift of No!

Do you ever struggle to say ‘No’ to what you don’t want? … to deny requests or set limits without feeling awkward, guilty or afraid of disappointing others? … to advocate for your own needs without losing the connection? Do you find yourself saying ‘Yes’ when you really mean ‘No’? Do you find it difficult to hear such a ‘half-hearted Yes’… or even a clear ‘No’? … resulting in tension, confusion or even taking it personally and feeling ‘rejected’ and resentful? We all navigate these challenging moments, and it can seem like a choice between protecting ourselves and protecting our relationships. But what if we didn’t have to choose? … if “No” wasn’t the end of a conversation, but the beginning of a deeper, more authentic connection? … if ‘No’ didn’t have to create tension or conflict, but instead more understanding and respect? … If we were able to give AND receive limits, denials & rejections as gifts? This training can show you how; it offers effective alternatives to these challenges; to master the fine art of compassionate rejection, courageous limit setting, careful hearing of the ‘Yes’ behind a ‘No’ and all you need to consciously navigate differences in desires and limits. We Explore: - The challenges of ‘No’: Recognize and transform your habitual reactions, personal and cultural blocks when navigating ‘No’, e.g. guilt, shame, resentment, over-accommodation, or fear of rejection. - Conditioned beliefs: Insights and practices to transform our limiting stories around ‘No’ . - Compassionate rejection: Increase your ability to say ‘No’ with courage, clarity AND care. - Receiving ‘No’ as a gift: How to hear limits and denials from others without taking it personally. - The ‘Yes behind the No’: Uncover the needs and intentions hidden within refusals and limits. - Avoidance: The many ways we avoid saying ‘No’ from the ‘Half-hearted Yes’ to silent resentment and passive-aggressive behaviour. - The 3 elements of an open-hearted ‘No’: Find clarity about your own needs, empathy for the other’s, and creative exploration for mutual solutions. - Making scary requests: We’ll also continue the practice of courageously asking for what we want, even in the face of rejection. You Can Gain: - Confidence: Trust yourself and others enough to say and be able to hear ‘No’. - Healthy boundaries: Say ‘No’ with care and firmness, honouring both your limits and the relationship. - Connection: Build deeper, more meaningful interactions with others by understanding the interplay of needs, requests and limits. - Clarity: A deeper understanding of how to balance your needs with those of others. - Experiential understanding: An embodied sense of how to stay connected to yourself and others, even in moments of disagreement. - Awareness: From knowing where exactly your limit is to the needs that guide your ‘No’ and the impact on others. - Empowerment: Find the inner freedom that comes from honouring both your own needs and the needs of others. - Practical skills: All you need to handle requests, refusals, and negotiations in daily life. No previous experience required. This is 1 of 2 related training days over the weekend. These are part of a tour of independent, yet mutually supportive, training days spread over 2 months. Power Up!

This training takes small steps toward the big questions: ~ How to make life more wonderful? ~ How to create the world we wish to live in? In particular, a major block to living the life we wish for: the difficulty in asking for what we want. We’ve been led to believe we should be self-sufficient, and that having needs and desires are bad… we’re afraid of rejection or being judged… or sometimes worse than hearing a ‘No’ is a Half-hearted Yes’ (then paying the price later). Often, we don’t even know what we want… or silently hope others will magically know without having to tell them. If we do find the confidence and inner clarity to ask for what we want, unfortunately, we rarely tell people why it’s important to us, and we often make demands out of fear of hearing a ‘No’… and so, either or both of us don’t get what we really want. In Power Up! we apply the principles and practices of transformative tools like Nonviolent Communication (NVC) to unlock the power within you: the power to get clear on what you want and why it matters; the power to ask boldly; the power to stay open to any response—including ‘No’; and the power to keep focus on the connection to make sure that you don’t get what you want at the expense of the other. We learn the fine art of making clear and courageous requests, to seek solutions that work for everyone – a key pillar of collaboration and every kind of relating. It doesn’t sound so easy, and, to be honest, it’s not. It is delicate, nuanced, and often one of the most challenging aspects of communication. So, we need lots of practice. Then when it comes to the delicate moments in our lives, when we need to be vulnerable and make a request, we will have the experience and skill to do so with courage, clarity and care! We Explore: - The art of making requests: Craft positive, specific and actionable requests that are easy to receive. - Power: Mobilize the power we have to know what we want and why we want it; to ask for what we want and remain open to ‘No’ - Fluidity: Naturalize your request language for ease and flow in real conversations. - Needs & requests: Discover how expressing both separately can create understanding and open space for infinite possibilities. - Barriers to asking: Identify and work through fears of rejection, shame or overwhelming others. - Abundance in strategies: Cultivate a mindset of creativity and openness when seeking to meet your needs. - Shifting from demands to requests: Honouring everyone’s autonomy so we can receive ‘No’ as a gift. You Can Gain: - Confidence: Trust yourself and others enough to ask for what you truly want without fear or shame. - Empowerment: Shift from making demands to compassionate requests, creating win-win dynamics in relationships. - Clarity: A deeper understanding of how to balance your needs with those of others. - Creativity: Be wild and courageous in generating requests for various needs. - Deeper self-awareness: Understand your own needs, fears, and limiting beliefs around asking. - Stronger relationships: Cultivate trust, respect and collaboration in personal and professional settings. Through interactive exercises, guided reflections and hands-on practice, you’ll build the confidence and skill to transform your everyday interactions. Join us to discover how making and responding to requests can open pathways to deeper connection, collaboration and joy. No previous experience required.
