    Medieval Alvalade 2026

Medieval Alvalade 2026 For three days—September 18, 19, and 20—the town of Alvalade “dresses up in full regalia” for what is one of the largest medieval fairs on the Iberian Peninsula. This event, likened to an authentic immersive history lesson, commemorates the granting of the Manueline Charter to this town in 1510. This year’s festival is themed “From Illness to Healing.” A new theme every year. A journey into the past is what the Alvalade Medieval initiative offers to all who visit the town, located in the municipality of Santiago do Cacém. The historical reenactment aims to mark the 516th anniversary of the granting of the Town Charter, which took place on September 20, 1510, by King Manuel I.

    The Arrival of the King

👑 King Manuel I is arriving EARLIER! There’s news in town… and this deserves to be announced with a trumpet fanfare! This year, King Manuel I is arriving earlier in Alvalade and bringing something new with him: before setting out in procession through the town’s streets, there will be a Royal Banquet. On Saturday, September 19, at 12:00 p.m., get ready to welcome King Manuel I and his entourage at Buraco do Rey. At 12:30 p.m., the Royal Banquet will be served, with a reception for official dignitaries and the townspeople, before the King and his entourage set off for the grand Royal Procession. And in a year when we’re traveling “From Ailment to Cure,” one thing is certain: even a Rey knows that, before any cure, one must treat the ailment… hunger! 👑 Come welcome El-Rey. 🍷 Come to the Royal Banquet. 🎺 And join his entourage through the streets of Alvalade. Because this year… El-Rey is arriving early. And so is the banquet! 📅 September 18, 19, and 20, 2026 👑 El-Rey’s Arrival — Saturday, September 19, at 12:00 p.m. 🍷 Royal Banquet — 12:30 p.m. 📞 Reservations: 965 336 322 📍 Alvalade, Alentejo Don’t miss the arrival of El-Rey!

    Medieval Alvalade 2026

✨ It is with great pride that we reveal the theme of Alvalade Medieval 2026: ⚜️ “From Illness to Healing” ⚜️ This year, we invite you to travel back to a time when caring for the body also meant caring for the soul. Few people know that Alvalade was once home to the Hospital do Espírito Santo, an institution founded between the 14th and 15th centuries to welcome the sick, pilgrims, merchants, and travelers. There they found shelter, food, and, in case of illness, the support of physicians, surgeons, and priests, who sought to treat the body and comfort the spirit. Inspired by this historical legacy, the 2026 edition will bring to life medieval medical practices, herbal knowledge, apothecaries, barber-surgeons, healers, pilgrims, and the stories of hope that shaped the lives of the communities of that time.

Theater – Nights at the Square – The Broken Jug

Throughout the month of August, the “Noites no Largo” initiative presents the play “A Bilha Quebrada,” performed by Baal17—the Baixo Alentejo Educational Theater Company—which will tour various locations in the municipality between August 13 and 30 at 9:30 p.m., in Alvalade, Costa de Santo André, Cercal do Alentejo, Vale de Água, Cruz de João Mendes, Abela, Santiago do Cacém, Ermidas-Sado, Santa Cruz, Vila Nova de Santo André, São Domingos, and São Bartolomeu da Serra. The Santiago do Cacém City Council, with the support of the parish councils, aims through this touring initiative to provide the public with free street theater performances, as part of a clear commitment to cultural decentralization. Musical procession through the streets of each town – 9:00 p.m. | Start of the show – 9:30 p.m. In a village court, Dona Marta demands justice: someone broke into her daughter Eva’s room during the night and smashed her favorite jug. Adão, the authoritarian and corrupt judge, prepares to settle the case for his own benefit, but as luck would have it, on that very day he receives a visit from an inspector from the city. Eva refuses to tell the truth, and suspicion falls on her fiancé. For Dona Brígida, who never misses a thing, the Devil is involved in the matter. After all, who broke Dona Marta’s jug? Text: h.v.
